This work completes the author's reinterpretation begun in "The Enlightenment: The Rise of Modern Paganism". It describes the programme of the "philosophes" and their views of society, with the aim of providing insights into the Enlightenment's critical method and its human and libertarian vision.

彼得·盖伊（Peter Gay），德裔美国史学家，耶鲁大学荣休教授。1923年生于柏林，后移民美国，在哥伦比亚大学获得博士学位，后曾在此任教。他著作等身，研究主题广泛，涉及启蒙运动、中产阶级等诸多社会文化史领域。曾荣获美国国家图书奖、美国历史学会杰出学术贡献奖、美国艺术与文学院金奖等重要奖项。盖伊先后花费了六七年时间撰写的《启蒙时代》至今依然是关于启蒙的必读之作。 译者王皖强，历史学博士，中国人民大学历史学院历史系教授，博士生导师， 世界近现代史教研室主任。 主要研究方向为西方思想文化史。译有《保守主义的含义》等。

文森佐·费罗内(Vincenzo Ferrone)，意大利著名历史学家，启蒙运动研究权威学者，都灵大学近代史教授，法兰西学院和普林斯顿高等研究院访问学者。1954年生于卢切拉，先后师从意大利史学家弗朗哥·文丘里和美国史学家玛格丽特·雅各布。主要研究领域为欧洲旧制度与启蒙运动史，目前集中研究人权史和启蒙文化中现代政治语言的出现及其对后世的影响。费罗内教授著述颇丰，除本书外，代表著作还有《意大利启蒙运动的思想根源》(1982)、《启蒙政治》(2003)、《人权史》(2014)等。 马涛，武汉大学哲学学院外国哲学专业博士在读。 曾允，武汉大学哲学学院外国哲学专业博士在读。
